Simmons has Prairie View A&M on riseBIRMINGHAM – Better sooner than later. Willie Simmons didn’t put a time frame when he’d turn Prairie View A&M into a serious SWAC contender, but did so in his first season as head coach as he led the Panthers to an 8-2 record. “The thing I told the team in our first-team meeting was that we’ll be successful when everyone buys in,” Simmons said Friday at SWAC media day. “I said, ‘I don’t know when that will be. It might this year. It might be next year. It might be five years down the road,’ but I said when everyone in this room buys in to what we’re trying to build here, we’ll be successful. They bought in last year.” Link to Story

Prairie View Coach Willie Simmons Talks 7 'Fs', Winning Willie Simmons is the second-year head coach at Prairie View A&M in the SWAC. In his first season, even without spring football, the Panthers finished with an 8-2 record and carry a six-game winning streak into the 2016 season. His offense led the FCS nation at 44.9 points per game, and was sixth in the country in offensive yardage. As a college player, Simmons was a starting QB at Clemson before transferring to The Citadel and starting there in 2003—leading the Bulldogs to their most productive season in nearly two decades. He has been in the college coaching ranks for more than a decade and at 35 years of age is considered one of the rising stars in the profession. He is a native of Quincy, Fla.—just north of Tallahassee.
Prairie View A&M was picked Friday to win the SWAC Western Division, while Alcorn State was picked to win the Eastern Division. Four players were selected to the SWAC Preseason All-Conference Team- OL Josiah Freeman, DL DeVohn Reed and DB Marquice O'Leary were picked first team, DB Dominique Weaver was picked for the second team.HERO SPORTS’ BRIAN MCLAUGHLIN: “Coach, how much does it come up as a topic of conversation that you started at quarterback at Clemson? About the environments you played in? Do the kids bring it up, especially considering what Clemson has been doing of late?” PRAIRIE VIEW A&M HEAD COACH WILLIE SIMMONS: “The fact that I played at Clemson is a topic of conversation. The players ask what it was like to run down the hill, play in front of 80,000 people. There’s always something to talk about. But more than anything we talk about what happens between the lines. You know, when I was at The Citadel my senior year, we were ranked in the Top 25 and played Wofford, ranked No. 2, and it was a packed house at Johnson-Hagood Stadium (The Citadel’s home field). I had the same feeling there that I did playing in front of 85,000 because a packed stadium is a packed stadium and you really can’t focus on the crowd anyway. And we talk about that.” Link to Story
