Prairie View A&M Football: The Big Three for 2017
These three games could be Prairie View's biggest this season.
A big season to prove national relevance awaits the Panthers in 2017
We will give you three games that will be huge for Prairie View's success this season. Not only huge but we would even go so far to call them must-win games. We will choose the three games in this way: one home, one away, and one of either home or away. These will also all be regular season games. Obviously the SWAC Championship or Celebration Bowl will be monumental games, but the opponents are not known, so we'll focus on the first 11 games for now. Without further ado, here we go.
Away vs Texas Southern (Saturday, September 2)
Always the biggest game of the season regardless, this Labor Day Classic should also live up to its hype. There isn’t much to say about this game that is not already known in terms of magnitude. Texas Southern comes into this game seeking revenge after almost spoiling the Panther's opening of the new Panther Stadium last year. Couple that with the possibility of the Panthers breaking in a new QB in a conference game against a cross-town, divisional rival and you got what is arguably THE biggest game of the season for the Panthers.
Away vs. Grambling State (Saturday, October 7)
Sandwiched in between a home game against Jackson State and an away game with Alcorn State (which is another big game), Prairie View and Grambling meet at the Cotton Bowl in a match that could very well determine who gets to take a trip to Houston for the SWAC Championship as the Western Division winner. Grambling is looking to replace the bulk of its starting front seven on defense and their top 3 WRs from last season, but they return two of the top dynamic players in the SWAC in quarterback Devante Kincade and running back Martez Carter. Grambling has been Prairie View's Achilles heel over the past two seasons so redemption has to be on their mind. Nevertheless, Prairie View could take a major step toward a division crown with a win here and show that "PV" is officially back. Beating the boys at the State Fair Classic will be big to cement this notion.
Away vs Southern (Saturday, November 4)
Depending on how both teams records are coming into this contest, this game could be the biggest of them all. Because this is another division game both teams will need a win to keep their championship hopes alive. Everyone in the SWAC knows how tough it is to win on "The Bluff" but Prairie View has won 3 of the past 4 games against Southern in Baton Rouge. The advantage for Prairie View in this game is that they will be coming off a homecoming game against Bacone College (an NAIA team they should have no problems with), so they should be well rested coming into the match-up with Southern. Nevertheless, Prairie View could take a major step toward a division crown with a win here as only one SWAC opponent (Arkansas - Pine Bluff) remains after this game.
So, in our opinion, those are Prairie View's three biggest games for 2017. Obviously, you could make cases for games such as Sam Houston State and Alcorn State, but this is how we see it. What do you think? Let us know below.
